So much fun ahead for August. I found some more off-beat holidays for us to celebrate in the coming days. In this love letter, you’ll find ideas from Spider-Man Day to Clown Day to Lottery Day. AUGUST 1 • SPIDER-MAN DAY

Spider-Man Day is dedicated to one of my grandson’s favorite superhero, Spider-Man. This day honors the character's first appearance in "Amazing Fantasy #15," published in 1962, created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko. Spider-Man quickly became one of the most popular and enduring superheroes, known for his relatable struggles and fabulous red-and-blue costume. The purpose of Spider-Man Day is to celebrate this arachnid’s impact on popular culture, and to inspire fans of all ages to embrace their inner hero.

FIVE WAYS TO CELEBRATE SPIDER-MAN DAY

1. SPIDER WEB ART: Tap into your creative side by making Spider-Man-themed art using actual spider webs. Collect webs from your garden (without harming the spiders) and use them as a unique medium for your artistic tribute to the hero. Or if you’re short on real webs, try using black construction paper, white glue, and glitter. Let kids draw intricate web patterns with the glue and sprinkle glitter over them for a sparkling effect.

2. SPIDEY SENSE OBSTACLE COURSE: Set up a backyard or indoor obstacle course where kids can practice their "spidey sense." Use ropes, tunnels, and balance beams to create a challenging yet fun course that mimics Spider-Man's agility and reflexes.

Spider-Man Party

If you really want to go all out, you can use those five ideas above as the activities for your very own Spider-Man Party. The photo montage above is from our party archive and offers shots from one of our past Spider-Man celebrations years ago. You know it’s a very special day when Granny puts on her Spiderman Bodysuit. There must be villains lurking somewhere.

We had an “Amazing Spiderman” party. I showed the kids the very real spider bite on my neck that I got when I was cleaning the flower beds in our Fairy Garden. I said I was starting to feel little webs growing out of my wrist and thought very soon I would be able to throw them on villains. To practice, I threw a little web on my husband and it froze him so he couldn’t move.

Roland and I looked very spider-y in our costumes, but Presley and Lilly didn’t want to wear their costumes or masks, and they didn’t want to take them home either. Lilly said, “It seems too real.” Presley said, “Granny is weird.”

We all took turns showing our best Spiderman acrobatics. Roland won Best Spiderman. Presley won Best Spider Girl. Lilly won Best Little Spider. I didn’t win because I made everyone laugh too hard. I made sure we don’t have any pictures of me spider dancing. They are secret, and as Peter Parker said, “We all have secrets.”

So connect to your inner superhero and celebrate Spidey! Whether you're swinging from building to building or just curling up with a comic book, take a moment on August 1st to celebrate the spectacular Spider-Man in your own special web.

AUGUST 2 • COLORING BOOK DAY

Coloring Book Day is dedicated to the joy and relaxation that comes from coloring. Coloring books have been a favorite pastime for children and adults since the invention of books, I bet. The origins of Coloring Book Day can be traced back to the rise in popularity of adult coloring books, which brought renewed attention to the benefits of this simple therapeutic activity. The purpose of this day is to encourage people of all ages to take a break from their busy lives and enjoy the calming effects of coloring.

FIVE WAYS TO CELEBRATE COLORING BOOK DAY

1. COLORING PICNIC: Take the coloring books and supplies outside for a delightful coloring picnic. Spread out a blanket in a park or backyard, and enjoy coloring amidst nature. Include themed snacks that match the coloring pages for an added fun twist. I bring along a bunch of cheap clipboards so we have a hard surface to work on. Walmart sells them for less than $2 a piece.

2. COLORING BOOK SWAP: Organize a coloring book swap with friends or neighbors. Each child can bring coloring books they no longer use and exchange for new ones. It not only encourages sharing, but also introduces kids to new and exciting themes.

3. COLOR AND TELL STORIES: Encourage children to create stories based on the pictures they color. After finishing a page, ask them to describe the scene and come up with a short story. This activity promotes creativity and improves storytelling skills.

4. GLOW-IN-THE-DARK COLORING: Use glow-in-the-dark markers or crayons to create unique coloring pages that light up at night. After coloring, turn off the lights and watch the pages come to life in the dark, adding an element of surprise and wonder.

5. CREATE A PERSONALIZED COLORING BOOK: Instead of using store-bought coloring books, print out custom coloring pages featuring family photos, favorite pets, or memorable vacation spots. Or you could just google “free [your topic] coloring pages” and you’ll find a slew of them to make your own little book.

The old chipped up porcelain bowl below sits patiently in our craft room waiting for kids who want to color. All our half-used crayons have gone in that bucket for about fifty years. We are firm believers art supplies should always be readily available. You never know when the muse will strike.

Coloring Book Day is simply a wonderful opportunity to immerse in the simple joy of coloring. This day not only fosters creativity and relaxation for all of us, it also provides a break from the daily grind. It’s just fun to make something pretty, I think.

AUGUST 4 • CLOWN DAY

Although Clown Day is typically celebrated on the first Sunday of August, we put on our red noses whenever the urge strikes. But August 4th is a special day for wanna-be clowns to appreciate the joy and laughter clowns bring to the world. Clowns, with their colorful costumes and wild antics, have become a staple of circuses and children’s parties.

FIVE WAYS TO CELEBRATE CLOWN DAY

1. CLOWN FACE PAINTING WORKSHOP: Teach children the basics of clown face painting. Provide safe, non-toxic face paints and guide them in creating their unique clown personas with vibrant designs. Don’t forget to have them pick a clown name.

2. BALLOON ANIMAL MAKING: Host a balloon animal-making session. Start with simple shapes like dogs or swords and gradually move to more complex designs. This activity not only entertains but also improves hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.

3. CLOWN SKIT CREATION: Have children work in small groups to create and perform their clown skits. Provide them with props and costumes, and encourage them to come up with funny scenarios. This promotes teamwork, creativity, and confidence in performing.

4. CLOWN PARADE: Organize a mini clown parade around your yard, neighborhood, or in a local park. Children can dress up in their clown outfits, complete with face paint and props, and parade around, bringing smiles and laughter to everyone they meet.

Clown School

Remember you can bundle all five activities together and offer your own Clown School! With all of our children and grandchildren, Keith and I have offered our world-class Clown School which aims to celebrate clowns and encourage the kids we love to explore the art of clowning, which combines performance, humor, and creativity.

As you can see in the photo above, Keith and I are exceedingly colorful professors. At this particular session, our youngest grandchildren mastered getting their hair inside their wig, learned how to choose the perfect red nose, how to make balloon  sculptures, the best method for filling a gum ball machine, the proper use of noisemakers and clown whistles, and, of course, the charm of rubber chickens. Our stomachs still hurt from laughing.

Clown School is a joyful celebration of the art of clowning, perfect for engaging children in fun and creativity. It’s really fun for kids to explore the playful and imaginative world of clowns. This day not only provides entertainment but also helps them develop new skills and build confidence.

AUGUST 9 • BOOK LOVERS DAY

Book Lovers Day is a special day for everyone who cherishes the joy of reading. Its purpose is to celebrate the pleasures of books. It encourages people to take a break from their busy lives and immerse themselves in a good read. It's a perfect opportunity for readers of all ages to explore new genres, revisit old favorites, and share their love of books with others.

FIVE WAYS TO CELEBRATE BOOK LOVERS DAY

1. OUTDOOR READING NOOK: Create a cozy outdoor reading nook with blankets, pillows, and fairy lights. Spend the afternoon with your kids reading favorite books outside, enjoying the fresh air and the magic of stories in a new setting.

2. CHARACTER DRESS-UP: Have children dress up as their favorite book characters and act out scenes from the books. This brings their best loved stories to life and adds an element of imaginative play.

3. BOOK-THEMED CRAFTS: Engage in book-themed crafts, such as making bookmarks, creating dioramas of favorite scenes, or drawing illustrations for stories. These activities deepen their connection to the books and inspire creativity.

Book Lovers Day warms my heart. It’s a celebration of reading and the joy that books bring into our lives. Its also a reminder of the endless adventures and learning opportunities they offer. With these activities, kids can deepen their love for literature in endless ways.

Library Day Party

If you are looking for more fun on your Book Lovers Day, how about a Library Day Party. Many years ago, Keith and I built bookshelves along our upstairs hallway to hold our family’s favorites. We call it the “Library Hall.”  Books are among our greatest treasures and we love to share them with our grandchildren whenever we get the chance. They liked browsing our stacks so much, I hosted a Library Day where they had a great time being librarians. If you decide to do the same, be forewarned, props sell the whole party!

They took turns being the librarian. One of the duties of the Librarian was to give tours of the facility.  During Presley’s tour, in addition to the “Main Stacks,” she introduced the little book shelf in our work-out room as “The Adult Section.” (I hid my snicker). 

The Librarian also helped patrons find books, made recommendations, checked them out, stamped the due dates, and, best of all, read at Story Time. It was a delightful experience and one of our grandchildren’s favorite parties

We agree with Albert Einstein who said: “The only thing that you absolutely have to know is the location of the library.”

AUGUST 16 • HAWAIIAN SHIRT DAY

Hawaiian Shirt Day is another one of those fun excuses to celebrate that I so dearly love. This sunny, relaxed holiday grew out of the popularity of Aloha shirts that exploded on the fashion scene in the 1930s. Hawaiian tailors created these colorful garments to cater to tourists and I will forever love them for it!

FIVE WAYS TO CELEBRATE HAWAIIAN SHIRT DAY

1. HULA DANCE LESSONS: Teach children the basic steps of hula dancing. Use traditional Hawaiian music and explain the significance of the dance moves, which often tell a story. This activity combines fun and cultural education.

2. DIY LEI MAKING: Provide materials for children to make their own leis using fresh or artificial flowers, paper, or beads. Explain the cultural importance of leis as symbols of affection and honor.

3. HAWAIIAN STORY TIME: Read Hawaiian myths and legends to the children. Choose stories that highlight the rich history and cultural heritage of Hawaii, fostering an appreciation for the islands’ traditions.

4. TROPICAL FRUIT TASTING: Introduce children to tropical fruits like pineapple, mango, and papaya. Create a tasting platter and discuss the flavors and nutritional benefits of each fruit. This sensory experience can be both fun and educational.

5. LUAU FEAST: Prepare a simple luau-inspired meal with the children. Involve them in making dishes like pineapple skewers, coconut rice, or Hawaiian-style sliders. Enjoy the meal together, emphasizing the communal aspect of a luau.

Above is a photo from one of our Luau Parties for the kids. We also had whole family versions with tiki torches, grass skirts, coconut bras, and sacrificing a virgin to the volcano - but I don’t have time to dig up those photos. (Maybe in a future newsletter). This luau I’m showing you was a whole lotta hula. I met the kids at the car when they got dropped off. I put leis around their necks and kissed them like it was Hawaii. We had lots of tropical decorations and hula dancers that wiggled when you jiggled them. We also had real pineapple with bumpy crust, as Lilly called it.

Presley sorted the leis by color so we could give them to people in the dance contest. Presley didn't think she could hula because of the boot she had to wear. (She sprained her ankle at soccer the night before). We all thought the grass skirts were scratchy. We learned to hula, heard stories, made some tropical crafts, and had a fruity feast.

Lilly had lots of fun with Paw putting leis on his neck to practice counting. Paw made funny faces and noises when he poked her in the ribs every time she reached up to put one on his head. It was a giggle fest.

A luau is perfect for engaging kids in fun and educational activities. It’s a great way for kids to immerse themselves in this exotic and colorful land. A Hawaiian Shirt Day or a Luau are both joyful ways to honor and share the rich heritage of the Hawaiian islands.

AUGUST 18 - BAD POETRY DAY

Bad Poetry Day encourages people to embrace their inner poet, regardless of skill level. The day was created to celebrate the joy of self-expression and to remind us that not everything needs to be perfect to be enjoyable. Bad Poetry Day aims to break down the barriers of perfectionism and allow people to have fun with language, rhymes, and creative expression without the pressure of creating a masterpiece.

FIVE WAYS TO CELEBRATE BAD POETRY DAY

1. BAD POETRY SLAM: Organize a gathering where kids read their intentionally terrible poems aloud. Encourage overly dramatic delivery for maximum comedic effect.

2. AWFUL ALLITERATION CHALLENGE: Challenge kids to write short poems using as much alliteration as possible, focusing on creating tongue-twisters and ridiculous phrases rather than meaningful content.

3. RANDOM WORD GENERATOR POETRY: Use an online random word generator to create a list of unrelated words, then task kids with incorporating all of these words into a nonsensical poem.

4. PARODY FAMOUS POEMS: Take well-known poems and rewrite them in the worst possible way, exaggerating their style or completely changing their meaning while maintaining a similar structure.

5. BAD HAIKU COMPETITION: Host a competition for writing the worst haikus possible, ignoring the traditional rules of syllable count and nature themes in favor of absurd topics and awkward phrasing.

If you know me, you know I love writing poems. This day encourages people to laugh at themselves, embrace imperfection, and find joy in the process of creating, rather than focusing solely on the end result. I try to do that with all my poems, which may be why I have so much fun writing them. I’ll be offering a Bad Poetry Day contest to my family this year and hope you do the same.

AUGUST 19 • PHOTOGRAPHY DAY

Photography Day is dedicated to the art, science, and history of photography. It’s purpose is to celebrate the evolution of photography, recognize the contributions of photographers, and encourage people to capture and share moments through the lens. These are the same things I am hoping to do with my “Photography at 240” website. It is first of all for my grandkids, but also for yours. I hope kids and parents might find it a good resource. My heart intends to have it done by August 19th for Photography Day, but summers are super busy, and I historically overcommit 0 so no promises. I’ve been working on it for over a year so it’s about time I wrap it up. In the meantime, here are . . .

FIVE WAYS TO CELEBRATE PHOTOGRAPHY DAY

1. NATURE PHOTO SCAVENGER HUNT: Create a list of natural items for children to find and photograph, such as a flower, a bird, or an interesting tree. This activity encourages exploration and appreciation of nature while developing photography skills.

2. DIY PINHOLE CAMERA: Help children make their own pinhole cameras using simple materials like a shoebox, aluminum foil, and photographic paper. This hands-on project teaches the basic principles of photography in a fun and engaging way.

3. PHOTO STORYBOOK CREATION: Have children take a series of photographs that tell a story. They can then print and arrange these photos into a storybook, adding captions or short narratives. This activity combines photography with storytelling, sparking creativity.

4. SHADOW & LIGHT EXPERIMENTS: Set up an area where children can experiment with light and shadows. Use a flashlight and various objects to create interesting shadow patterns and take photographs of the results. This teaches them about lighting in photography.

5. PHOTO COLLAGE ART: Encourage children to take photos of their favorite things or moments throughout the day. Print these photos and help them create a collage on a large poster board. This project can be a wonderful keepsake and a way to reflect on their experiences.

Photo Contest

One of my favorite things to do with my family is Photo Contests. If you remember from last month’s Granny Bunny Fun newsletter, July 26th was National Dog Photography Day, so, of course, I had a photo contest. Images were due by midnight the day before. Just from our little family, I got almost 70 entries! It seems everyone loves taking photos of the animals they love. So consider a photo contest too as you make your celebration plans. They are highly recommended by Granny Bunny herself!

World Photography Day is a perfectly wonderful opportunity to introduce children to the fascinating world of photography. It fosters an appreciation for capturing moments and telling stories through pictures. That’s a very nice thing to do for anyone, but especially your kids.

AUGUST 21 • POOH’S BIRTHDAY

Many people celebrate Winnie the Pooh Day on January 18th, which marks the birthday of A.A. Milne, the beloved author who created Winnie the Pooh. But Milne’s birthday is NOT Winnie the Pooh’s birthday, and this practice upsets that sweet, loveable bear. In "House at Pooh Corner", it clearly states Pooh was gifted to Christopher Robin Milne on his first birthday, which is August 21, 1920. That makes Pooh a year younger, so Pooh's real birthday falls on August 21, 1921. The purpose of this day is to celebrate the timeless charm and wisdom of Pooh and his friends of the Hundred Acre Woods.

FIVE WAYS TO CELEBRATE WINNIE THE POOH DAY

1. POOH BEAR PICNIC: Host a Pooh Bear-themed picnic with honey sandwiches, fruit, and other simple treats. Encourage children to bring their favorite stuffed animals and enjoy a cozy outdoor or indoor picnic, just like Pooh and his friends.

2. STORY TIME WITH POOH: Read classic Winnie the Pooh stories aloud. Use different voices for each character to make the stories come alive. Afterward, discuss the themes of friendship and adventure with the kids.

3. HONEY POT CRAFT: Help children create their own “honey pots” using small jars or pots. They can decorate them with paint, stickers, or markers and use them to store small treasures or treats.

4. POOH CHARACTER DRESS-UP: Have a dress-up day where children can come dressed as their favorite characters from the Hundred Acre Wood. You could even organize a small parade or play where they can act out scenes from the books. I actually got to wear my friend Caroline’s Pooh costume to read stories to my daughter’s classes when they were in grade school. Of course, I also passed out Bit-O-Honey candies to the audience. One of my favorite life memories was being Pooh Bear.

5. NATURE WALK & POOH SCAVENGER HUNT: Take the children on a nature walk and organize a scavenger hunt to find items related to Pooh’s adventures, such as a “honey tree,” a “bouncy spot” like Tigger’s, or a “rabbit hole.” This activity connects them with nature and the stories.

Birthday Party for Pooh Bear

Above are some of the preparations of a little birthday party for Pooh with cake and candles. I also got some gifts for the silly bear: a Pooh storybook and a Pooh puzzle. There are party favors: Bit O’Honey candies, of course. And there’s a Netflix Pooh video queued for “play.” 

Oh, no! The one thing missing is a Pooh stuffed bear which has most likely ended up at the bottom of some forgotten toy crate by now. I improvised by making a Pooh mask for The Rat puppet.  He is our family villain who lives in a drawer in our living room.  I am sure The Rat will appreciate getting a chance to fool the kids, steal Pooh’s presents, and eat Pooh's cake.

My favorite quote from Pooh world was said by Christopher Robin to Pooh:

“You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”

Let’s face it, Winnie the Pooh Day is one of the most heartwarming celebrations you can have. All of us need a periodic visit to the Hundred Acre Wood where we can experience a joyful reminder of the timeless themes of friendship and adventure that Pooh and his friends represent. And who doesn’t love birthday cake?

AUGUST 27 • LOTTERY DAY

International Lottery Day is a time to enjoy the fun and excitement of lottery games. While actual lottery participation is restricted to adults, this day can be an opportunity to teach kids about probability, risk management, and responsible gaming in a fun and educational manner. It is a chance to introduce concepts of chance, decision-making, and basic statistics too.

FIVE WAYS TO CELEBRATE LOTTERY DAY

1. PROBABILITY PIÑATA: Fill a piñata with different colored candies or small toys. Before breaking it open, have the kids guess what percentage of each color or type of item they think is inside. After the piñata is broken, count the items to see how close their guesses were. This introduces concepts of estimation and probability distribution. (A simpler version uses jelly beans in a jar).

2. LOTTERY ART PROJECT: Have children create their own lottery tickets using art supplies. They can design colorful tickets with imaginative prizes. This combines creativity with the excitement of the lottery. You might want to couple this with a real scratch-off lottery ticket for each child.

3. DREAM BIG ACTIVITY: Encourage kids to think about what they would do if they won a large sum of money. Have them share their list, and discuss their dreams, goals, and the importance of planning and saving. This is a chance to promote some financial literacy and goal-setting. It is wondrous when you first realize you can save up for a dream and make it come true.

4. RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS LOTTERY: Create a "kindness lottery" where children draw random acts of kindness from a hat or bowl. This could include things like "help set the table" or "give a compliment to someone." This activity teaches that sometimes random selection can lead to positive outcomes.

5. BOARD GAME MARATHON: Choose board games that involve dice or spinners, e.g., The Game of Life. Discuss how chance affects the game outcomes and strategies for dealing with unpredictable events.

Probability is one of the most delightful ways to learn math concepts. It also touches on the importance of dreaming big while understanding the value of planning and giving back.

AUGUST 31 • WE LOVE MEMOIRS DAY

I just love memoirs so much that I even have devoted a whole section of my website to helping people write theirs. Click HERE for a peek. I am so excited! I never even heard of “We Love Memoirs Day” until a few weeks ago. It encourages people to share their life experiences and to read and reflect on the memoirs of other people. Life stories offer a unique glimpse into different ways of living and of different times, which builds empathy and understanding.

FIVE WAYS TO CELEBRATE MEMOIR DAY

1. FAMILY STORY TIME: Gather family members to share their favorite childhood stories and memories. This can be a wonderful bonding experience and a way for children to learn more about their family history.

2. CREATE A MEMORY BOOK: Help children create their own memory books. They can include photos, drawings, and written memories of special events or everyday moments. This project encourages reflection and creativity.

3. MEMOIR READING HOUR: Choose age-appropriate memoirs or autobiographies to read aloud. Discuss the stories and what can be learned from the experiences of others, fostering empathy and understanding.

4. INTERVIEW A FAMILY MEMBER: Have children interview an older family member about their life experiences. They can record the interview or write down the stories, creating a valuable keepsake and learning about oral history.

5. PERSONAL TIMELINE PROJECT: Assist children in creating a personal timeline of their life so far. They can include significant events, achievements, and memorable moments. This activity helps them reflect on their own stories and how they’ve grown.
