Answer as few or as many questions as you like to build your story. Each answer will be an entry in your memoir. There are 29 questions, one for each day of the month for those of you who like to make this a daily journaling practice.

(a) It always makes sense to start with a list. Grab a cup of something to sip, a tablet, and pen. Sit quietly and create your list of the people that shaped you. You can add to this list as more people occur to you.

(b) You may want to approach this chapter in sections by organizing your list into categories such as Mentors, Friends, Colleagues, Influencers, and Family.

(c) Five Great Ways to Incorporate the “People Who Shaped You” in your Mosaic Memoir:

1. Mentorship Moments: Share the wisdom imparted by mentors whose guidance has been instrumental in your personal and professional growth. Consider creating a special block or using a different font or color, or all caps to emphasize and call out their invaluable pieces of advice. For instance, if a mentor shared the mantra "never borrow from or lend to friends," give that prominence in your narrative in a way that appeals to you.

2. Friendship Chronicles: Capture the enduring bonds with cherished friends. Chronicle the shared moments of joy, support, and resilience. And don’t miss your opportunity to deepen these connections! Consider reaching out to reconnect. Whether through a phone call, a shared lunch, or a heartfelt letter expressing gratitude, these gestures can enhance the lasting impact of your friendship.

3. Colleague Connections: Reflect on colleagues or mentors in your professional journey, highlighting pivotal moments and lessons learned. This is another opportunity to express your gratitude and reconnect. Step into those moments.

4. World Influencers: Recognize individuals who have inspired you or who have left an enduring impact on your life who you may not know or ever meet. This may include historical figures, role models, etc. Not all shaping is done by people we know personally. Capture the essence of their impact as well.

(d) Handling Sensitive Stories:

Often we are inspired by someone’s handling of adversity. Approach these stories with sensitivity and respect. Be cautious in details you reveal that might shame or embarrass the person. People’s personal tragedies are not ours to share without their consent, unless they are already public.

To flesh out the full picture of these relationships, it may be interesting to talk with the person involved and ask them how they saw you, why they helped you, and what they’ve experienced within the relationship.

On a personal note, this is one of my favorite memoir chapters. It overflows with gratitude and appreciation. Your Mosaic Memoir journey begins with selecting the right tools. When it comes to tools, it's all about finding what works for you. You could get yourself a journal – it could be a simple notebook or a diary. There are so many beautiful ones available, you surely will find one that appeals to you. Something with enough space for your thoughts. Don't worry about it being perfect, just make sure it feels right for you. It's your Mosaic Memoir, so make it yours. While a notebook is a classic choice, before you shop, consider other options too.

Scrapbooks allow for a more visual approach, incorporating doodles, drawings, photos, and even bits of memorabilia. They come in various sizes and are often expandable, allowing for the addition of more pages as needed.

If you prefer a digital route, online word processors offer flexibility. This is always my choice because of the ease of editing and incorporating other elements. A computer word-processing file also allows me to digitally export and post easily. But I also love paper, so often print and bind things like this. It is also better if you want to make multiple copies for gifts or safekeeping.

No matter how you choose to create your memoir, the key is to make it yours, embracing the medium that resonates with you. And depending on what you’ve decided, you may need to grab some pens, pencils, or whatever you like to use for writing - or drawing, if you intend to add some artwork.

Creating a cozy writing spot remains crucial, regardless of the medium you choose. Whether it's a physical corner or a digital space, make it comfortable and free from distractions. Keep your chosen tools within reach, fostering a seamless transition from thought to expression.
