WELCOME TO OUR ADVENTURE

This Halloween Night, Ugly Bugly the Witch-Poet has gotten herself into a terrible mess. It all began when her broom was stolen. Dementors and banshees have located her hide-out in Granny and Paw’s basement with Dork the Philosopher Dwarf Skeleton. They are on their way to transport Ugly Bugly to her evil father. And the Ministry of Magic is after her as well, believing that she has abetted the most dangerous of all criminals in his escape from their prison. She knows our players well and trusts their kindness and cunning. They are her only hope of justice in the harsh witching world where magic battles magic.

HOW TO PLAY

The story begins with some cursory information. You must take it from there. What do you see? What do you do? Each player has a die. Roll a 1,2,or 3 and your scenario is manifested and you may be rewarded depending on the Dungeon Master’s generosity. Roll a 4, 5, or 6 and your scenario didn’t work AND a consequence or death may befall you depending on the Dungeon Master’s mercy in that moment. As you walk through your adventure, you write the story. It is magically transcribed in the Adventure’s “Grail Diary” which you can follow at the end of this page. Breathe in courage. Exhale fear.

CAUTION TO GRAIL DIARY READERS

As we let our imaginations run wild, we abandon polite social conventions and do not admonish children’s frequent references to bodily functions - instead, we laugh at them. Too often, we’ve found boundaries stifle creative expression. We think it’s best to make your own boundaries rather than embrace society’s domestication. We think you do that best by pushing them and occasionally crossing them to find where you’re comfortable. Keith and I feel it’s their parent’s job to make whatever boundaries they see fit despite our abdication of any such expectations. Yes, it’s true. We spoil the grandchildren with delight.

OUR LOST PRINCESS

On one beautiful summer day, Presley and Lilly were playing a game outside at their grandparents’ house. It was called “Hat Frisbee” where they tossed hats with giant brims trying to make them sail like a flying saucer. As they were tossing their hats back and forth in the backyard, a chipmunk ran between them. It wasn’t an ordinary chipmunk. It was wearing an apron and running on it’s two back legs like a tiny person.

Presley and Lilly couldn’t believe their eyes. “We have to catch it and show Granny and Paw,” Lilly said.

Presley yelled back, “Quick, it is running into the Fairy Garden.”

Many, many years ago, when Granny and Paw were just Mom and Dad, they made the little garden so their daughters, Maggie and Mollie, could watch the fairies dance in the moonlight. There’s a little sign Paw painted inside the garden by some white trilliums. It reads “Maggie and Mollie’s Fairy Garden.” He painted little flowers on the sign too.

Granny sees fairies there often. More and more fairies dance in the garden each summer because Granny plants fairy eggs and Paw waters them until they hatch. Presley and Lilly remember seeing fairies there when they were little, but none recently. In fact, it was so long ago, the sisters wondered if it was just their imagination. Some people say fairies aren’t real, you know.

As Presley ran into the garden she reached out to grab the chipmunk, but missed by an inch. She had it trapped against the rock and got a very good look at its face. The light blue eyes reminded her of her swimming pool. Its face was so cute and pretty, it made Presley think it might be female.

Lilly came flying around the corner into the garden right behind Presley. “Look, Presley,” she said. “It says something in tiny letters on its apron.” And Lilly was right. There was a little embroidered pink heart and the word “Lulabelle.”

“On three, Lilly, we both try to grab her,” whispered Presley

“One.” They both got their feet ready to lunge. Lulabelle raised one eyebrow as if she knew what they were planning.

“Two.” The girls held their arms out so they’d be ready to grab the cute little thing. Lulabelle smiled.

“Three.” Both girls lunged at Lulabelle who sprinted across the stone walk to the ferns by the lilacs toward a small hole burroughed into the ground.

Presley and Lilly were stunned. They had both sides of Lulabell'e’s apron and were holding on for dear life. They couldn’t move her. It was like she was nailed into the ground. They tugged and tugged. Lulabelle tugged back, trying to get to the hole. She stretched out her foot as far as she could - then stretched a little more while Presley and Lilly grabbed the apron even tighter and heaved and heaved. They watched as Lulabelle stretched out her foot - stretched and stretched, then slid her big toe into the hole.

ZING! ZOINK! ZAP!

Presley and Lilly still had hold of Lulabelle’s apron, but they were pulled into the hole with the little chipmunk. They found themselves in a magnificent great hall of a castle filled with tables of food with hundreds of chipmunks laughing and talking like they were people. Some talked in French. Others spoke Spanish. The older ones were speaking Latin. And quite a few spoke English.

Presley looked at Lilly.

Lilly looked at Presley.

They both let go of Lulabelle’s apron and looked up at the ceiling to see how high they might have to climb to get to the chipmunk hole to go home. But, guess what. The hole was gone. Game over

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?

Elsa decided to try to make friends with Lulabelle and find out where they were and what was going on. “We need Chester,” said John-Butt.

“You’re right,” said Elsa as she pulled out her wand to teleport Chester to this new place. Chester had been peacefully watching television and eating his lunch one second, then spinning through space the next. He found himself in the castle with his two cousins, John-Butt and Elsa. Poor Chester was very confused, but the girls explained everything that had happened in great detail.

“Well, we need to decide what to do,” said Chester. Then a discussion ensued on potential next steps. Finally, they agreed to chat a bit with Lulabelle to learn what was going on.

Elsa smiled broadly at the little chipmunk and asked her where they were. All listened intently as Lulabelle explained they were in Fairyland. “I know it looks like chipmunk land, but once you walk out that door, it’s all fairies.” Lulabelle seemed very nice. She said she was the chef of the castle and asked if she could get them anything to eat before they journeyed out into Fairyland.

Chester ordered a baked potato and thigh of elf (well done).

Elsa didn’t order right away. Being exceedingly empathetic, Elsa suspected Lulabelle might really like it if someone made Lulabelle food for a change. So when Lulabelle said, “And what can I get for you, Elsa,” Elsa said, “No, Lulabelle. What can I get you? What is your favorite food?”

Lulabelle was very pleased with Elsa’s thoughtfulness. She said she loved acorns, chestnuts, and seeds from trees. So Elsa used her magic to manifest a giant bucket filled with Lulabelle’s favorite treats. Then, at Lulabelle’s insistence, Elsa ordered. She asked for carrot cake and sushi for her own supper.

John-Butt, who is particularly cautious, asked Elsa to make her some food because she didn’t quite trust Lulabelle. John-Butt asked for fish crackers, sausage slices, and a glass of milk, which Elsa created with her magic.

John-Butt was right to be suspicious. Soon Roland’s throat was thickening and he could hardly breathe. Elsa and John-Butt tried 3-4 different magical remedies until they finally saved him from death by poison just in the knick of time. One more roll of the dice and he would have died.

But then Elsa’s throat also began to swell and she too was suffocating and dying. Chester and John-Butt did what they could, trying all their spells and incantations, but Elsa kept getting weaker and weaker. In desperation, John-Butt pushed out one of her turd bombs and forced it into a most uncooperative Elsa’s mouth, who was yelling, “NO! NO”! When it blew up, it enlarged Elsa’s throat, saving her from death by poison. Elsa said she would have rather died than eat Lilly’s poo. They all laughed.

Luckily, John-Butt’s caution spared her from being poisoned.

The trio discussed Lulabelle’s treachery. Chester thought they should kill her. Elsa thought they should talk to her. John-Butt proposed that maybe chipmunks have a power that messes up teleportation and Lulabelle wanted more powers. (Note: Dungeon Master was impressed by the attention to motive from such a young adventurer).

A great debate was held on the topic and the agreed plan was to talk first and then kill her if they didn’t like what they heard.

“Lulabelle, we know you tried to poison us,” challenged Chester.

“No I didn’t,” claimed Lulabelle in her sweet, innocent chipmunk voice.

“Yes, you did,” said Elsa as she grabbed for her weapon wand when all of the sudden, she saw the little chipmunk’s apron tear off of her body as Lulabelle doubled in size.

Chester watched in horror as the chipmunk grew to the size of a dog, then a man (either of the Dan’s).

John-Butt let out a little squeal as the chipmunk kept growing to the size of an Alaskan Grizzly Bear. And now they noted that the other chipmunks were all starting to grow too.

Meanwhile, giant Lulabelle now started to transform. The hair and hide fell from her body leaving only a black, bony, insect-like creature with fangs. It screamed like a banshee as it unfolded huge black wings with blood dripping from its veins. It was an evil fairy.

John-Butt was so terrified, she pooped out the biggest turd-bomb she ever pooped in her life and threw it at the ceiling, blasting a giant hole in the roof of the castle.

Quick to action, Elsa yelled, “Aaaaaaah OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” And in seconds their three dragons appeared. They each mounted them with haste and ascended through the hole in the roof. Chester and John-Butt know Elsa is an able navigator so they let her lead them up over the clouds and out over the sea to a sunny island. Although they tried seven times, for some reason, the dragons refused to land on the island.

Chester decided to summon Geoffrey, his Griffin, to see what help he might be. He and the griffin hadn’t seen each other for ages, since their last adventure together. Geoffrey was old and wrinkled, sporting a white and grey beard. He was feeble of body but strong of spirit. It was a touching reunion.

Between Geoffrey’s familiarity with the area and Elsa’s navigating, finally our flying adventurers landed in a bright, sunny clearing in a peaceful looking forest.

Elsa used her ice powers to create an ice castle, filled it with ice furnishings, and filled several ice tables with all of their favorite foods. They nibbled a little, but their tummies were still a little upside-down from the poison. Even though the outside of the castle was dripping from the hot sunshine, it made gorgeous icicles. Elsa had used special AC2 ground-contact treated ice on the inside to keep things solid and comfortable.

While John-Butt and Elsa chatted, Chester, who is often given to mischief, decided to venture off by himself on his griffin in search of a Bandit Camp. He intended to look for a Mage’s house, because we all know every Bandit Camp has at least one. Chester loves stealing wizard hats and his collection is quite famous. He was in search of a new entry into his archive.

Soon, Chester located a nearby camp that looked ripe for the picking. He tied his griffin to an oak tree and walked the rest of the way, traveling through the camp in search of the mage’s house. Eventually he spotted “a weird looking home, but worthy enough.” Chester said, “I trust it,” and knocked on the door.

Imagine his surprise when “Eli With Great Hair” answered Chester’s knock. The mage welcomed him in, and Chester accepted, looking around the room for any signs of wizard hats. Even though Chester was much older since last time they met, he was worried the mage might recognize him. Long ago, Chester had stolen this wizard’s hat and been punished with a diarrhea curse as a natural consequence of magical thievery.

The wizard thought he looked familiar but couldn’t place him. He wrinkled his brow and twisted up his face. “Do I know you,” he asked? Chester assured him they were unacquainted.

“You have really great hair, Eli,” Chester said wryly - but it was Chester’s unlucky day.

Eli tossed his hair and shook his head in a way that made his hair look especially shiny and luxurious. “Thank you,” he said proudly. Then a dark look came over his visage. “I KNOW YOU,” he threatened with his fist waving in the air. Then he started whizzing all over the place - lightening bolts, flames, ionic beams - all aimed at a scampering Chester who was dodging as best he could, but burned here, singed there.

CRASH!

Elsa appeared on the top of the dining table breaking several plates and glasses. She had teleported to Roland to reunite with him. Then she noticed “Eli” and his very great hair.

“Daddy,” she screamed with surprise as she ran to give her father a big hug. “Gee, your hair looks great,” she said. "I’m in a big hurry and was wondering if you could give me your wizard hat and a wand with healing powers. I really need them.”

Eli With Great Hair couldn’t refuse his little sweetie and complied.

“I’m kinda hurt here,” complained Chester. “And I’m your daughter’s friend. I’m really sorry I stole your hat that one time, but I didn’t steal anything from you this time. And you already punished me with diarrhea once. I think you owe me an apology,” claimed Chester hopefully.

“I think you should give him a magic crystal, Daddy,” said Elsa. And Dad did. Then hugs all around and the duo teleported back to the ice castle where John-Butt was waiting.

When they returned to the castle, Lilly John-Butt was nowhere to be found, but they could hear her screaming. Chester and Elsa had left Lilly unattended which is a very bad thing in any situation, but especially when giant chipmunks, evil fairies, and angry wizards are around.

They understood by her screams and the swirling portal on the ceiling that she was with them in the castle, but trapped in another dimension. The first time they tried to teleport Lilly back, all that returned was Lilly’s foot. The second time they got her nose. The third time, the rest of her head. They were panicked and worried she would bleed to death in that other dimension. Chester and Elsa knew this wasn’t going to work.

Elsa had no choice. She had to teleport the time machine through the portal to Lilly, hoping Lilly could use it to save herself. Elsa and Chester knew this meant, without the time machine, they might never be able to get back to their own space-time continuum - what they called “home.” But Lilly was the most important problem right now.

They held their breath waiting as the dice rolled. YES! Lilly was saved and appeared reunited with all body parts in tact and functional. As Chester and Elsa were hugging Lilly, they heard a pounding.

“Someone is at the door,” said Elsa. She went to open it and there before them was a cute unicorn-dog named Reggie with a horn on his head and little wings. They started to close the door when they heard a second barking coming from the forest. Then, scampering toward them appeared another dog named Pugsley. And they all hugged and cuddled the puppies, munched on the delicious food, and visited about their adventure until bedtime.

Elsa and Chester each went off to their bedrooms with Reggie and Pugsley, respectively. But John-Butt waited alone in the ice chair downstairs. She was trying to remember the other dimension but the memory was just blurry. She thought and thought and just started to drift off to sleep when a beautiful ruby fairy appeared. She was wearing a ruby red dress like a ballerina’s dress. She wore a ruby crown, ruby necklace, and a ruby ring. She was singing a song in another language. It sounded like an angel. It was so beautiful. Then the ruby fairy spoke.

“John-Butt, for your courage in the alternate dimension, our fairy clan has decided to award you with the fae ring of transfiguration called, “Spond”.

It is an ancient ring formed from metals found only in the alternate dimension. This ring will allow you to transform yourself into any living creature. You will look and sound exactly like that person or animal. To activate the ring, you say, “SPOND (and then the name of the animal or person). When you want to be yourself again, you just say, “RESPOND.”

The fairy said, “Guard the ring. You can lend it to people you trust to use it wisely, but don’t let it fall into evil hands. You will need the ring to save the Fairy Princess.”

“Wait. What fairy princess?,” John-Butt asked. But it was too late. The fairy had vanished leaving only a dim ruby light where she had been moments before.

John-Butt slid the ring on her finger. It felt as light as a fairy wing and glowed a little like a tiny red light. She fell fast asleep in the ice chair. Game Over

THE SEARCH BEGINS

In the morning, our three adventurers yawned their way to the ice castle’s Great Room where they munched on leftover food from last night’s feast. After they fed the dogs, Elsa and Chester decided they would just like to stay home and rest today. John-Butt decided she would like to go look for the lost Fairy Princess. Just as they were discussing their day’s plans, they heard a strange and enchanting sound. It was a beautiful voice singing strange words. They were mesmerized as a red glowing light appeared in the air above them, and slowly materialized into the Ruby Fairy (magnificently played by Maggie May, in costume, who appeared unexpectedly in one of our Zoom meeting tiles).

The fairy’s beauty touched their souls. She had the kindest face and long, wild, white hair that blew back when she moved even though there was no wind. She wore a long red gown that shimmered in the light. Her turquoise eyes sparkled. Her outfit was meticulously accessorized with invisible ruby jewelry and the famous ruby slippers, once worn by a girl from Kansas. Even though her image was merely projected through a Zoom tile, the smell of her perfume was hypnotic. No one could take their eyes off of her.

“You must help me,” she pleaded. “My sister has been kidnapped by Lulabelle and the Evil Chipmunks. You must find her! You will face many challenges in your search, and it is very important that you look for the magic crystal. Do you have any questions for me?”"

Elsa asked, “What is Lulabelle’s weakness?”

The Ruby Fairy replied that Lulabelle had a food allergy, but she didn’t know to what food.

Chester asked, “What is that sound in the background? It sounds like barking.”

“Oh, that’s my dragon-corn. Half dragon and half unicorn,” the red beauty answered.

And that was a clue to Elsa who sensed the food Lulabelle was allergic to was DRAGONFRUIT. And the dice said Elsa guessed correctly.

AND SO THE QUEST BEGINS.

Every expedition needs a leader, and this time our troupe would follow Chester. As John-Butt and Elsa discussed where they might start the adventure, Chester meditated. Everyone waited silently for Chester to emerge from his trance.

“I have concluded my decision,” announced Chester. “I have grim report: weapons will not be enough. I must make some potions before we leave. I will wait here and meditate some more while the two of you go into the forest and bring me back a wooded bowl, a small wooden stick, and a variety of plants.”

Elsa and John-Butt were nervous in the forest, but no danger befell them. They were able to find the items Chester needed for his potions and returned to him without incident. They watched as Chester made the following potions:

  • Two Invisibility potions

  • Three Health potions

  • One Paralysis potion to use against an enemy

One of the suggestions for where to commence their quest was the Island of Namura, which they had visited in a previous adventure. It was suggested by Elsa and resonated with Chester. Both Elsa and John-Butt cheered when Chester announced that is where the rescue of the Fairy Princess would begin.

Elsa attempted to use her teleportation magic to relocate them to the Island of Namara, but this failed. They took this to mean there must be some powerful magic repelling them. Then Chester held the crystal he had received from Eli With Great Hair. It glowed blue and landed the three of them in a clearing on the Island of Namara. They stood quietly surveying the area, familiarizing themselves with the landmarks and looking for clues.

That’s when they noticed over by a large pile of rocks, there was a black shimmering portal with a chipmunk trapped in it.

Elsa grabbed a weapon bag and filled it with little ice balls she made. When she throws them at the enemy, the ice balls’ frigid coldness will temporarily freeze them. She thought they might neutralize the chipmunk.

John-Butt worked hard to squeeze out a weapon bagful of poop-bombs, disgusting and effective against all manner of villains, including chipmunks.

Elsa then set about making a gun that would launch dragonfruit at Lulabelle to provoke an allergic reaction. Meanwhile, John-Butt made a “shield for her teeth”. She explained, “It’s in case I get hit in the mouth, I don’t want my teeth to fall out.”

Preparations for battle continued as Elsa received permission from Chester to employ her ice powers to outfit each of them with a full suit of impenetrable ice armor. At last, they were ready to enter the portal. Elsa and John-Butt waited for Chester to decide when to go. But before he could finalize his plan, John-Butt tapped their shoulders while holding her finger over her lips to signal “quiet.”

They listened intently and heard a faint “EEP EEP” sound. With the other hand, Lilly John-Butt pointed to a tree on the edge of the clearing. A small animal sat eating an acorn. It was wearing an apron!

“Lulabelle!,” whispered Elsa. The chipmunk’s ears perked up and it ran full blast past them to the other side of the clearing and into the forest.

“Let’s go use our weapons on her,” shouted Elsa.

“No,” said Chester. “I don’t want to meet Lulabelle in her feral, big, rabid form. That’s what we might encounter if she thinks we’re attacking. I’d rather fight her as a chipmunk. We will follow her and see where she goes.”

The three ran quietly through the woods, keeping a safe distance from the cute little rodent so Lulabelle wouldn’t know she was being followed. The chipmunk came upon a giant boulder, as high as a house. It had a small door at the base, just big enough for a chipmunk.

The adventurers watched as Lulabelle took a little gold key out of her apron pocket and unlocked the door. She thought she heard something and froze. She looked around, but could see no one - so she tried to quickly slip the key into her pocket, but it fell to the ground. She stooped to pick it up and ran inside, locking the door behind her.

Chester led his team to the little door. Elsa asked Chester if she could make an ice key using her ice powers and the impression of the dropped key on the ground. Chester thought that was a great idea.

Elsa fashioned the key, slipped it into the lock, and cracked open the door. She nuzzled her head down into the opening and could see it was an empty room and in the back was Lulabelle heading for what looked like the kitchen. “I think we need to teleport,” Elsa said. But it didn’t work. There must be an anti-teleportation charm on the boulder.

John-Butt said, “I think we should use my ruby ring to turn into chipmunks and walk through the door. John-Butt went first. “Spond Chipmunk." She transformed into a cute little chipmunk, a great dancer with a blonde pony-tail. Her hands were tiny now, so the ring just slid off.

Chester reached his hand through the door and grabbed the ring. He slid it onto his finger and said, “Spond Chipmunk.” He was a handsome chipmunk with big muscles and a six-pack. He wore dark sunglasses.”

Next, Elsa reached into the boulder room and grabbed the ring. With it snug on her finger, she incanted, “Spond Chipmunk.” Nothing happened. Elsa stood outside in her human form. But not to waste a second in a single one of the 5 Steps of Acceptance, she said, “I use my powers to make a remote-controlled animatronic ice chipmunk that looks real.” And the machine joined John-Butt and Chester inside.

Chester counted down their attack in whispers, “3 - 2 - 1 - ATTACK!” The duo, joined by the chipmunk robot, hurled weapons on Lulabelle until she was unconscious. Chester and Elsa dragged her limp body into an ice cage that Elsa had conjured. With the help of the robot chipmunk, they dragged the cage to the doorway.

Once outside the boulder with the little cage, Chester and John-Butt did the counter-charm, “Respond.” Elsa gave the life-size John-Butt her ruby ring. And Chester opened his cloak and tucked the little cage with the sleeping chipmunk into the deepest pocket. “I think we should head back to the clearing,” said Chester.

After a short distance through the forest, they were discussing Elsa’s plan to make a carrot cake full of truth serum to feed to Lulabelle. When they had arrived just a few feet from the clearing, an enormous dragon flew right overhead carrying Eli with Great Hair. They all cheered at his arrival. He looked magnificent with his hair waving in the breeze. He tossed his curls and smiled broadly.

“I’ve only got a minute,” he said. “But thought I’d fly by. Need anything,” he asked without even landing the dragon.

“I’d like YOUR wizard hat,” yelled Chester.

“I’d like a crystal with powers, Daddy,” hollered Elsa.

“And I’d like a GIANT crystal with power, please,” asked John-Butt.

And from atop the dragon, EWGH threw down a hat and two crystals. “Bye bye,” he yelled as he hurried off to places unspoken, unknown, and unsafe. They waved and watched him disappear into a tiny speck in the clouds.

As the adventurers picked up their loot and stashed it in their Weapon Bags, an old woman in a black velvet robe stepped into the clearing. The robe had golden trim and she looked auspicious. She was wearing a golden crown made of chain and had long, long hair. “I am the Dungeon Master,” she said. “You may ask one question of me?”

Elsa jumped out and asked, “Where is the kidnapped Fairy Princess?”

The Dungeon Master spoke in a deep and trembling tone. “She is inside an evil fairy’s jewelry box magically locked on a pedestal. When you open the box, music plays and the pedestal turns in a circle while the fairy princess screams for help.” Then the old woman vanished. The trio stood speechless, trying to imagine what to do next.

THE LAST CHANCE

After some discussion, the trio finally agrees they will enter the glimmering black portal. Just as they reached out to hold hands for the teleportation spell, Chester disappeared. John-Butt and Elsa were shocked and terrified. They touched their crystals together and asked for help. The crystals glowed orange and gave them a special magical map. Even though it was made of paper, it worked like the maps in your car or phone. They could see where Chester was and they could see where they were by the little blinking dots.

They could see Roland had been kidnapped to an island in the middle of an unknown sea. Elsa and John-Butt decided it would be better if they stuck together rather than taking separate dragons. That way they could protect each other. Elsa yelled, “Aaaaaaah OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO,” and in seconds her dragon was there with them in the clearing.

Elsa said, “I’ll steer Crystal because she’s my dragon.” John-Butt hopped on the back hugging Elsa’s waist. “Wait, a minute,” said Elsa. The Ruby Fairy said we would need a Crystal to save the Fairy Princess. All this time, I thought she meant a crystal gem. What if she meant my dragon?”

The girls flew as fast as Crystal could carry them to the strange island in the middle of nowhere. They looked around and saw light, so they landed cautiously. They saw it was coming from the mouth of a cave. And when they got closer they could see it was not magic but ordinary lights like the ones on the ceiling of their bedroom. There was a large, six inch lever by the entrance. Elsa pulled it. Oh, wow! The floor opened up and creaky, old stairs appeared leading down to the lower level. They weren’t sure if they dare go down, not knowing what might be waiting.

Then the map started to glow a purplish color and a fairy popped off the map - but not like a real fairy. It was digital like from a video game. The fairy said, “Come. I’m from the map. Follow me to Chester.”

Both girls ran down the stairs as fast as they could to keep up with the fairy. John-Butt tripped on one of the stairs and tumbled the rest of the way. When she landed, one of the giant, black, bony fairies grabbed her and cackled in its banshee voice.

Another grabbed Elsa by the hair and began dragging her down the hall. Elsa quickly turned herself into ice, then melted. The evil fairy thought she disappeared. But, moments later, Elsa reappeared as an ice giant and froze everything in the room. She melted John-Butt right away so she was unharmed. When she tried to melt the fairies again, they turned into black fairy dust.

As they stood trying to decide which way to go, they could hear a voice that sounded like Chester. They chased after it down the hall as it got louder and louder. They couldn’t understand what he was saying. Then they came to a brick wall. They could still hear him. The map said he was behind the wall.

They got close to the wall and held their ears close to try to make sure it was Chester and understand what he was saying. It was Roland! He was saying, “Press the brick.” Sure enough, there was a brick that stuck out a little more from the rest. When they pressed it, the wall moved away revealing a jail with Chester chained inside.

John-Butt possesses many magical powers, many magical objects, and knows many incantations, but she likes it “old school.” She took a barrette out of her hair (the kind her Granny wears) and picked the lock with it.

“Where is the Fairy Princess,” screamed John-Butt"?

Chester replied, “She is in…” - and he disappeared again.

The girls were shocked and deeply worried for his safety. They consulted the map and watched closely waiting for Chester to appear. Soon, his little dot started blinking. He was back in Fond du Lac, right in the middle of Waters grade school where their very first adventure had begun.

Elsa and John-Butt teleported to the school, then ran next door to their Granny and Paw’s house to get supplies. They used the opportunity to make more ice balls and poop bombs. Then John-Butt came up with the idea to make the ultimate weapon: frozen, giant, poop bomb, ice balls. So they made some of those too. While John-Butt conjured her new weapons, Elsa took the opportunity to fashion an ice key that would open “Every. Single. Door. In the WHOLE SCHOOL!”

(The genius of their forethought, engineering and fabrication skills deeply impressed the Dungeon Master).

Elsa and John-Butt were finally ready. After reviewing the list of all their weapons and powers, they ventured to the front of the school where Elsa slipped her ice key into the lock and turned. They were in.

As the door opened, they saw black fairy dust trailing straight down the hall and turning left toward the gym. They decided to follow it. It seemed strange crunching along on the black fairy dust, knowing it once was evil fairies. They arrived at the gym door. It was locked. Elsa used her ice key, but it wouldn’t work. More powerful magic was protecting the lock.

They decided to go to the second door and were surprised to find it was just closed, but not locked. They carefully cracked open the door, trying not to make a single sound. They peeked in and could see all the lights were on. Chester was chained in a cage on the middle of the basketball court. There was some sort of black oozing stuff hanging from the ceiling. It dripped on to the floor and Chester’s cage. And when it dropped it started to grow more oozing, black slime.

Elsa made a spell with her ice powers to fill the room with gas that froze everything except humans. She and John-Butt stormed the gym, broke into Chester’s cage, freed him from the chains, and asked him one very important question:

WHY DO YOU KEEP POOFING?

Chester was exhausted from his ordeal, and all the poofing, but managed to explain. He said, “Lita madura Canban mano.” He kept saying it over and over, but no one could understand what he meant. All they knew was that Chester had a speaking curse and would be of little help.

Frustrated that he was not understood, Chester grabbed their hands and ran from the gym with them. He led them down the hall and started running up the stairs to the second floor - when he stopped abruptly near the top. He held his finger to his mouth as if to say, “Shhhhhh.”

Chester pointed his other finger down the hallway. At the end of the corridor was a wide door with two evil fairies holding spears. John-Butt and Elsa knew Chester was trying to tell them this was the way they needed to go to rescue the Fairy Princess.

Still stooping down on the stairs, they gathered up their weapons and their courage. In a blink of an eye, they were charging down the hall screaming. There was ice and poop everywhere as they blasted the fairies with everything they could. Soon both fairies were frozen solid and smelled pretty stinky.

Elsa slid her ice key into the door, but it wouldn’t open. She was realizing her ice powers were no match for the fairies counter-curses. They decided it would be best to use a teleportation spell, and it worked! There they stood in a large room with only a beautiful white box covered in diamond sitting on the floor. On the top of the box, was the shape of a heart made of pink rubies. It had little lace around the outside of the heart, as if it was a valentine. There was a golden lock on the box.

“My key,” yelled John-Butt. “I’ve been carrying this key since we began these adventures and we never knew what it was for - but now I do. It has that exact same heart carved on it.”

John Butt carefully positioned her key in the lock and turned, as Chester and Elsa watched. It didn’t open like a normal box, but the lid and sides folded away flat to the floor. And there she was. The little fairy princess with a ladybug on her shoulder. The magic that held her to the pedestal was released. She looked up at her three saviors and smiled.

Chester lifted her from the floor and balanced her on his hand. “Let’s teleport outta here,” Elsa suggested. So they did.

Now standing safely in the front of the school, they realized they had no idea how to return the little princess to her kingdom. But, first things first.

“How do we fix Chester’s voice?” Elsa asked the fairy.

The young child explained the evil fairies had drained all of her magic from her and she could not help, but if they could take her home, she was sure her parents, the King and Queen, would have powerful magic to help.

“Where is your home,” asked John-Butt.

The little fairy said, “I’m not sure how to get there from here. There is a portal that takes you to the evil fairies Great Hall. We would have to sneak past all of them and head into the forest, find the fairy tree and kiss it. It is a portal to my kingdom.”

“We know where the portal is,” said John-Butt, so excited she was jumping a little bit. “It is in our Granny & Paw’s Fairy Garden. Follow me!”

So the foursome made their way to the portal where they first saw Lulabelle when this adventure began. “This won’t work,” said the princess. “We need to look like chipmunks or they will kill us.”

“It’s okay. I have the Ruby Fairy’s ring,” squeaked John-Butt - so excited she might burst. And she held the ring up high in the air, slid it on her finger and yelled, “SPOND Chipmunk.” And each of them did the same. They were all chipmunks now. Elsa conjured up a little apron with an embroidered heart and the word “Lulabelle.” She managed to look almost exactly like this treacherous evil fairy who was amazingly cute as a chipmunk.

Our friends disguised as four chipmunks slipped into the portal and found themselves in the back of the Great Hall. They each grabbed a tray of food pretending to be Lulabelle and her helpers. As they walked through the hall, they put food on the tables as they passed. Soon they were at the door to the forest. Chester opened it and they all ran through, bolting for the forest as fast as their little chipmunk legs would carry them.

Out of breath and safely hidden in the dense foliage of the forest, they each took turns “RESPONDING” to return to their authentic forms.

They wandered through the forest studying trees. “Look, over there,” said Elsa. “That tree has the same heart that is on John-Butt’s key and on the jewelry box.”

“Yes, you found it.” said the Fairy Princess. Everyone yelled “YAY!”

“We must each kiss the heart and we will enter the kingdom,” the princess reminded them. There was a lot of tree smooching and soon they found themselves standing in a huge crowd of people with the King and Queen farthest away on their thrones.

“Mother, Father, it’s me,” said the little princess with tears in her eyes.

The King and Queen jumped to their feet as they ran to their daughter. She ran to meet them. They picked her up and twirled her around as the people in this huge Throne Room cheered. Confetti and balloons dropped from the ceiling. Chester, John-Butt, and Elsa stood and watched this unfold in amazement.

When the King was back on his throne with the Queen beside him and the princess on his lap, he said, “We would like to give a gift to the princess’s rescuers. Please come forward.”

John-Butt started running to the King and Queen, but then slowed so Chester and Elsa could catch up. They all walked together and kneeled in front of the royal monarchs. Three pages dressed in fancy uniforms marched from the back of the room. Each was carrying a black velvet pillow. On the pillows were crowns.

“Lilly John-Butt,” said the King as he stood and placed the crown on her head, “We give you this blue sapphire crown and the gift of wishes. Touch it with both hands to make a wish. You are granted one wish on each day for the rest of your life.”

“Chester Langrogang, we give you this golden topaz crown and the gift of fame. Touch it with both hands and say the name of the online game of which you want to be the world’s master with a YouTube channel of 6 billion followers.”

“And, Elsa, to you we give this green emerald crown and the gift of language. Touch your crown and say the name of a language, animal, or person. You will be able to understand and speak the language of any living thing, even magical creatures.”

Chester, John-Butt, and Elsa were all very delighted and thankful for their gifts.

Then the Queen stood and spoke, “Now these are the gifts we wanted you to have for your adventures ahead, but we also want to grant you something you would like very much. Elsa, you first. If you could have anything, what would you like?”

Elsa said she would like the power of making anything appear, so they gave her an incantation and loaded some magic into her wand. When Elsa says “Apparato” and then the name of something, it will appear.

Next was Chester. When the Queen asked him what he would like, he said, “Benito Kowma.” No one could understand what he meant. Elsa touched her emerald green crown and said, “Chester Langrogang.” The room was silent. Everyone was wondering if it would work.

Chester repeated, “Benito Kowma.”

“He wants his griffin Geoffrey to be young again,” Elsa explained. And everyone cheered for Elsa and her gift of language.

“And it will be so,” said the Queen - and everyone cheered. “And, finally, you, John-Butt. If you could have anything in the world, what would it be?”

John-Butt thought the longest about this question. Everyone whispered, wondering what she would pick. At last John-Butt spoke, “I want to be a baby again. I want to start over.”

Elsa protested, “No. Don’t let her do it. Please don’t make her a baby.”

The Queen asked John-Butt, “Do you want to be a baby all of the time, or just whenever you want to.”

John-Butt said, “Permanent.”

And Elsa threw herself on the floor sobbing and crying, “Please. No. No. No. Don’t do it.”

And John-Butt relented. “Okay, I was kidding. Just when I want to be a baby.”

And the Queen made it so.

Then the Fairy Princess thanked them and gave each a hug and a kiss. She asked them to hold hands and her parents would send them home to their parents. They stood holding hands watching their new fairy friend waving good-bye. The next thing they knew, they were standing in front of the school.

They ran as fast as they could to Granny and Paw’s house. After more hugs and kisses from them, they were loaded into the back of Paw’s truck. They had to lay down in the bed and then he closed the lid. They couldn’t sit in the backseat in the cab because of Covid.

They drove first to Maggie’s house, where she and Mollie and the whole family were in the backyard sitting in lawn chairs, drinking wine and crying. When they saw their children, they did the same thing the King and Queen did when they saw the princess: They cried, and hugged and kissed their children. But they were a little upset that Chester could not communicate using English.

The Dungeon Master took note that Chester tried to ask several times to get his English back, but the King and Queen couldn’t understand him. When Elsa was given the gift of language, she decided NOT to ask the King and Queen to fix Chester’s speech. She thought it would be fun to have secret conversations with him that no one else understood. Not to be mean, but because she likes having her friendship with Chester feel special. No one knows how Chester feels about this because we can’t understand him, but Elsa says he’s fine.

Maybe Chester will find his English in their next adventure. Stay tuned.
