How to Impersonate Miss Ladybug

If you missed your moment to pretend to be a ladybug flying around your family’s garden, life is giving you a second chance. Some of the most rewarding fun you can have with our sweet Miss Ladybug is impersonating her in your writing to children. Whether it’s a lengthy letter, quick message, birthday card, or thank you note, receiving her correspondence is an exciting event in the life of a child. I think you’ll find it’s also exciting for you to write as her. So slip on your red tutu and tie on those ladybug wings. It’s finally your turn!

I find writing in the voice of a fictional character is both a fun and creative exercise, but it also can be a tad intimidating if you’ve never written in the style of a sweet, old ladybug poet. There’s just not many life circumstances where that comes up so you probably don’t have much practice. To help you get started, I’ll be offering some tips to help you write in the style of Miss Ladybug. Let’s get started!

TONE
When writing in the style of our ladybug heroine, the tone should be warm, gentle, and whimsical. Think of the tone as the one you’d hear in a letter from your grandmother - you want it to be full of love and affection. Don’t stray too far from the sweet feeling this tone conveys. Always try to make your representation of Miss Ladybug feel natural and unforced.

CONTENT
As a famous poet, our fictional ladybug character has a keen sense of observation and a love of nature, and of course poems. Consider including references to flowers, trees, and other elements of the natural world in your writing. Additionally, because she is old, our ladybug character has a soft spot for nostalgia and the past, so incorporating elements of nostalgia into your writing can help capture her voice. A final suggestion would be to add occasional references to the Ladybug Literary Society, and the castle which is the Society’s headquarters and Miss Ladybug’s home. You may also want to include liberal praise and affection for the many ladybugs who live with her or are influenced by her love of poetry. She loves them all is if they were her darling children.

WORD CHOICE

Word choice is key when impersonating Miss Ladybug. Choose words that are soft and gentle, and capture the beauty and wonder of the natural world. Consider using similes and metaphors to describe things in a unique and whimsical way. For example, instead of saying "the sun was setting," you could say "the sun was a golden balloon slowly sinking behind the hills.” Never use harsh or aggressive language.

In short, when you are channelling Miss Ladybug, think warmth, kindness, and a big loving hug and you should do just great!
