JS-7

What is the role of ritual in spiritual practice?

He will wipe every tear from their eyes,
and there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain,
for the old order has passed away.”
“Behold, I make all things new.” Rev 2: 4,5b

CROSS BY THE SIDE OF THE ROAD

Walking down an old country road
I happened upon an old wooden cross
The white paint chipped with passing age
Handwritten letters too faded to read

A vase beneath covered in moss
The flowers had long since withered away.
A stump stood shattered at its base
The solemn mark of two lives lost that night.

Strange ways we seek when facing death
Marking the scene with a sign of our faith
As if a portal opens up
Allowing us to mourn and plead, “Come back!”

I stood silently at the scene
Wondering who it was that died that night.
I said a prayer for their mother
And another for the shattered tree.
