How do we cultivate humility without losing self-worth?

SEE THE FOREST FROM THE TREE

Humility is not shrinking our worth into smallness,
and certainly not inflating it beyond its measure.
Humility is recognizing our infinitesimal
yet vital place in this story.

Our being matters to the bigger picture.
Yes, we are not the forest,
but the forest is incomplete
without the tree that is us.

And being a tree is amazing!
Standing tall under the sun,
giving shade,
offering your best branches
to squirrels and birds,
astonishing the world with your beauty.

My mother often said, with a wink:
“Humility is correct self-evaluation.
And I think I’m pretty darn great.”

Her joke was true.
Humility is acceptance,
embracing the raw truth
of who we are and who we aren’t.

And Mom really was pretty darn great.
