Perspective on Possessions
FABLES FOR OUR GRANDCHILDREN
READING TIME: 1 MINUTE
I don’t need a mobile phone.
I don’t need a microwave.
I don’t need air conditioning.
I don’t need two bathrooms.
I don’t need an electric blanket.
I don’t need my own computer.
I have said all those things in the past. And, of course, I was right. I didn’t actually need them. But isn’t life often so much easier or better or more enjoyable with them?
Where does that “I don’t need…” thing come from? For example, in my case, I don’t think it’s fear of change cuz I love new tech. No, I think it’s really partly fear of being wasteful and partly fear of being unworthy.
Somehow there are people, like your grandfather, who know fear of anything is a waste of time. It messes with the flow of life and all sorts of stuff gets clogged up, probably including your arteries.
Your desires are whispering to you. Don’t silence them. They bring you to an easier, better, more enjoyable life. Just like love, stuff itself needs to circulate to be useful. Hats need to land on your head. Cell phones need to land in your pocket, and that e-blankie wants to cuddle you on your bed. And maybe extra stuff floats by for the taking just so you can share.
But a quick caution: ignore the whispers of avarice. Pay attention so you know the difference.
Work for what you truly need and accept those things your heart desires. Real wealth is having enough to share, and that has less to do with money, and everything to do with what’s in your heart.
I love you,
Granny
