Why We Eat Endless Crap

FABLES FOR OUR GRANDCHILDREN

When you find yourself shoveling loads of crap into your body, ask yourself why. If you live in 21st century America, the truth is almost never related to food. It’s fatigue, it’s anger, it’s stress, it’s fear, it’s being taken for granted, it’s loneliness, and so on. At times, we are each looking for a little short-term comfort from life’s difficulties — and those French fries will do the trick. Super-size, please.

We turn to food because we can’t find the real things we crave, like appreciation, forgiveness, or understanding. So the next time you’re feeling “hungry” follow these steps.

  1. Take a second to name what you are really hungry for. If you can’t put your finger on it, the catch-all of “wanting to be loved” works every time.

  2. Take another second to channel Dr. Freud und give yourself a prescription.

Lonely? Reach out. Make a phone call.

Hurt? Take a shower and have a good cry.

    Tired? Take a nap.

  3. Be sure to take all the money you saved on junk food and spend it on something wonderful for yourself, or spend it on someone who doesn’t understand they’re not really looking for a donut — they just want some happiness.  (For the record, if I am the person you have in mind, I would rather have the donut).

I love you,
Granny
