Albert Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity gave us some important insights that change the way we understand the universe. Although they were considered a little crazy at the time, his ideas have since been proven and led to many more discoveries. Here’s a little one that you should think about when you are feeling helpless, hopeless, weak, and insignificant. 

Because of Einstein and the many scientists that came after him, we know space is actually a gravitational field. We know that gravitational field curves and twists, bends and tilts. And we know why. Because of matter. Matter bends the gravitational field which is what we think of as space. Due to this curved space around an object - say a star, for example, it will cause a planet to orbit around the star. It is simply following the curved space like a penny rolling in one of those gumball machines. This curved space will also cause light to stop moving in a straight line and it will curve around the star too. 

So when you are feeling powerless, close your eyes. You are not just a pawn in some giant chess game. You are also made of matter. YOU are curving space and drawing things to you.

We are a part of something huge and wondrous. We play an active role in this mysterious miracle. Without us, the entire universe would unfold differently.  

Now go bend some space with your gravitational force!  Use your powers for good.
